An audit has discovered that almost $900,000 of about $1.13 million in COVID-19 reduction funds acquired by the town of West Haven, Connecticut, have been spent on ineligible items or lacked adequate documentation. Auditors didn’t study some $600,000 in COVID-19 funds acquired by the town which are the topic of a federal fraud prosecution. Former Democratic state Rep. Michael DiMassa, who was an administrative assistant to the town council, and his former enterprise affiliate John Bernardo have been charged with wire fraud in October. Prosecutors mentioned they stole $600,000 in COVID-19 funds by submitting fraudulent invoices to the town by means of an organization they fashioned.
